Long Beach Police Department officers investigating an
unauthorized entry at Veteran's Memorial Stadium were charged by a dog that
they shot at but missed, a spokesperson said Thursday.
"Uniformed Special Services Officers assigned to Long
Beach City College were investigating an open gate at the stadium," Long
Beach Police Department spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said in a statement.
"When the officers entered the stadium, which was
closed to the public, they observed a subject inside with his dog, a large
mixed breed," Pratt continued. "The officers approached the subject
to speak with him and as they did, a dog which was not on a leash, ran at the
officers and an officer involved shooting occurred."
But the dog was not wounded, and it ran from the stadium at
5000 E. Lew Davis Street. Other officers followed the dog to its nearby home,
where city Animal Care Services interviewed the dog owners. It was not clear if
they were the same as the individual at the campus.
